It's Never Too Late to Become a Pro
How late is too late to begin a career in professional golf? Ask Tom Lehman, Calvin Peete, Fred Funk or Brandel Chamblee. All highly successful on the PGA or Senior PGA Tours, they are excellent examples of golfers whose careers improved with age. None of these players achieved tournament wins on the PGA Tour until they were in their mid-thirties.

Two Notable Late Bloomers

Calvin Peete, winner of twelve PGA Tour events, with numerous top finishes on the Senior PGA Tour. Peete suffered a childhood injury that left his left arm permanently damaged. He did not learn to play golf until the age of 23. Peete did not win his first PGA Tour event until he was 36 years old.

Brandel Chamblee, winner of one PGA Tour event, one BUY.COM Tour event with numerous top finishes on both tours. Chamblee grew up riding horses and roping calves in Texas. He taught himself the game of golf by watching players on television. His BUY.COM Tour win came at the age of 29 and Chamblee did not win on the PGA Tour until he was 36 years old.

Some notable players have taken detours in their professional golf careers because of injuries, military duty or a change of heart. Others have had games that were simply slower to peak. Particularly interesting careers include those of Ben Hogan, Jay Siegel, Joel Edwards, Tom Pernice, Jr. and Joe Durant. Both Pernice and Edwards were over 40 years old before they achieved their first PGA Tour victories.

With tournament prize money now substantial, it is easier than ever for players-even late bloomers-to afford to play the Tour for years in pursuit of a win.

The Senior PGA Tour has produced its own variety of late bloomers. This talented group includes players who had no experience or only a few years of play on the PGA or BUY.COM Tours. Players including Dana Quigley, Jim Holtgrieve, Walter Hall and Steve Veriato have all claimed spots on the Senior PGA Tour.

As younger men, some had pursued careers as teaching professionals while others worked in businesses unrelated to golf. All were united by a love of the game, continued practice, devotion to amateur or mini tour events and the dream that when their 50th birthday came, they would give professional golf a serious shot.
